Pocket Chordsmith is a fast, mobile-friendly music sketchpad for writing chord progressions, beats, bass lines, melodies, guitar parts, loops, and full song ideas directly in your browser.

It is designed to be quick enough for a phone, but deep enough to sketch proper arrangements. Start in Simple mode with the essentials, then switch to Advanced mode when you want sections, MIDI, live playing, lofi, western and chiptune presets, sound controls, guitar rhythms, export options, and project handoff tools.

Make music quickly

  • Build chord progressions in major or minor keys
  • Write drums, bass, melody, and guitar parts
  • Use Simple mode for quick loop building
  • Use Advanced mode for deeper sequencing and arranging
  • Create song sections A-H and sequence them into longer ideas
  • Use random ideas, melody ideas, drum presets, and lofi/chill presets to get started faster
  • Shape the feel with swing, humanise, pump/sidechain-style movement, delay, chorus, flanger, reverb, and sidechain-style pump

Sounds and styles

Pocket Chordsmith uses lightweight browser-based instruments, including piano, saloon piano, harp, pads, glassy keys, dusty Rhodes, felt piano, cassette keys, muted jazz guitar, lofi warm pad, synth leads, bells, guitar tones, brass-style leads, and mellow lofi instruments.

The newer lofi/chill tools are especially useful for cosy game music, background loops, study beats, menu music, and relaxed songwriting sketches. Presets include Study Room, Rainy Window, Moon Garden, Koi Pond, Train Window, Ant Farm Night, Menu Warmth, and Sleepy Waltz.

Export and continue elsewhere

  • Export compact JSON for backup and sharing
  • Copy mobile-friendly PCS1 share codes
  • Export MIDI for DAWs and notation tools
  • Export WAV when you want an audio render
  • Import MIDI in Advanced mode as a starting point for new sketches
  • Send projects onward to Pocket DJ, Pocket DAW, or Godot workflows

Use with Pocket DAW

Pocket Chordsmith is the sketchpad. Pocket DAW is the desktop studio.

Start an idea here, then move it into Pocket DAW when you want a larger timeline, deeper editing, mixing, audio/MIDI material, and fuller music export options.

Game music and Godot

Pocket Chordsmith is also built with game music prototyping in mind. You can export songs as JSON or share codes, then bring them into supported Pocket Audio and Godot workflows.

Best for

  • Songwriting sketches
  • Chord progression experiments
  • Lofi and cosy loop creation
  • Game music prototyping
  • Mobile music-making
  • MIDI idea drafting
  • Beginners, hobbyists, and solo developers who want a lightweight music tool

Notes

Pocket Chordsmith runs in the browser and uses Web Audio instruments rather than large sampled libraries. Performance and audio behaviour may vary slightly depending on device and browser.

For best results, open it directly in a modern browser and tap Play once to unlock audio.
